I love living in New York because of the four distinct seasons we “normally” have, but with Climate Change, it is getting more difficult to define, “normal”.
That being said, we had another snow event, and are having another one as I am writing down these words.
After the snow stopped, and I gave the Highway Crew a chance to clear the roads, I headed out to capture some of the local beauty.
This photograph is from my neighborhood, just a short walk from my home as the clouds began to part and allowed the blue skies to peep through. There is something magical about freshly fallen snow against a backdrop of blue skies.
I named this comp “January Atonality” due to the scattered nature of all the trees and their branches as they held onto the virgin white snow that had just cascaded down upon this detailed forest landscape.
“January Atonality”
As I shared prior in my “January Atonality” photograph, the Hudson Valley in New York had a substantial snow event that I took advantage of by photographing three different locations fairly close to where I live.
This area, known as the Scenic Black Dirt Region aka “The Drowned Lands” has been captured by yours truly many times before covering all four seasons.
For me, with this particular comp, I felt very satisfied that I added another worthy winter photograph of the many farms there during the winter months.
I arrived to this location @ an hour after the storm passed, and the skies began to clear during the Golden Hour before sunset.
As I was shooting different perspectives, I had to keep a watchful eye as I was set up along the well traveled Pulaski Highway, although the traffic was fairly light due to the recent storm
Nonetheless less, all it would have taken, was for one distracted driver to put an end to things, temporarily or for good. π
This old abandoned and collapsing home was a perfect subject counterpoint to the snow covered onion fields in the middle ground, and Mt. Eve in the distant background.
And of course, the sky above was absolutely beautiful!
βWinter Binaryβ
This is Cromwell Creek, and it was my last photographic stop of my mini-tour, photographing right after a snow event earlier that day in the Hudson Valley, New York.
I previously uploaded the first two images from my local excursion; “January Atonality” & “Winter Binary” that documents the other areas that I photographed before finishing up here.
This semi-panoramic capture (I stitched two photos together), was composed from a small bridge that crosses over the creek right after sunset and at the cusp of the Blue Hour.
The frozen surface of the water reflected the last golden hues of the day, and was an appropriate counterpoint to the blue hues of the snow covered tree branches as nighttime began to take over the landscape.
It was a fitting and satisfying end to a most productive local photographic excursion.
