About the MonoVisions Awards
The MonoVisions Awards is a juried annual competition designed to identify and celebrate the world’s best black and white photographers. Open to professionals and amateurs alike, the competition accepts all forms of monochrome photography—film or digital, traditional or experimental.
Each year, photographers compete for $5,000 in cash prizes across two major categories:
- Black and White Photo of the Year
- Black and White Series of the Year
Its mission is simple: to elevate monochrome photography and provide artists with meaningful opportunities for recognition, visibility, and career advancement.
My Series: Creatures Of The Mist
This was my first time entering the MonoVisions Awards, having discovered the competition late last year. I submitted a quintet of waterfall compositions created over several years—some captured close to home in New York, others photographed during my travels across the country.
The series title, Creatures Of The Mist, refers to the folklore surrounding waterfalls: the spirits said to dwell in the pools below, emerging through the veils of mist created by the force of falling water.

Each photograph features intentional vignetting to draw the viewer’s eye toward the power and movement of water. Using a 6‑stop neutral density filter, I created long exposures that reveal the contrast between silky, flowing water and the textured stone carved over millennia. Waterfalls have always been one of nature’s most meditative and spiritually resonant subjects for me—full of mysticism, clarity, and emotional grounding.
Photography, for me, has never been about competition or sales. It is an artistic pursuit that enriches my retirement years with purpose, exploration, and creativity. Still, I am grateful for the honor of being recognized, and equally grateful when someone chooses to bring my work into their home or office. Art should bring life to a space.
